A group of talented teens made Baton Rouge and Louisiana proud on January 1st. The Louisiana Leadership Institute High School All Star Marching Band had the honor of being selected as one of the bands to march in the 2007 Rose Parade in Pasedena, California.
The band has a history of winning awards such as the 2005 Home Depot Battle of The Bands Award in Carson, California. That year they were awarded $10, 000 to buy instruments. Their exciting performance that year caught the attention of the Rose Parade organizers and led to the coveted invitation to march in the 2007 Rose Parade.
The band was founded four years ago as part of an educational program to tutor students in math, science, english and to foster leadership skills. Other honors include winning first place at the Martin Luther King Battle of Bands in St. Petersburg, Florida and first place in the Juneteenth Battle of Bands in Austin, Texas. The band has played at numerous New Orleans Saints games and Mardi Gras parades.
Hats off to the band and their Director Mr. Cornell Knighten. There are young people doing wonderful things despite all the bad news you hear and read!
